The Gift of Food: A Benefit for Northern Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief
If you live in the Bay Area and enjoy whisky, you probably follow Chris from The WhiskyWall and have heard about this event from his site. However, since it’s such a good cause and an awesome event - help Japan AND drink some whisky AND have a good time?!?! — I thought I’d post it again.
What: The Gift of Food: A Benefit for Northern Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief, presented by Umamimart
When: Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4th, 8 pm to late
Where: The Burritt Room, 417 Stockton St. @ Sutter
What to Drink: Yamazaki Highballs; also sponsored by Bulleit, Glen Grant, The Glenrothes (all distributed by SKYY Spirits, not sure if they’ll have drinks there), Choya, Takara Sake, Joto Sake (Sake brands), Asahi Beer and Brugal Rum
Admission: $40 advance / $45 at the door (cash only); proceeds go to Second Harvest Japan, Japan’s first food bank. They distribute food to soup kitchens, orphanages, the elderly, emergency shelters, the homeless, etc. Here’s some information about work the Second Harvest Japan has done to help after the quake, as well as their blog.
If you can’t make the event, but would like to donate, you can do so here.
Here’s Neyah White from Yamazaki’s take on the highball and why it’s the drink-of-choice for tomorrow night’s event:
“There is no drink more quintessentially ‘Japanese’ right now than the highball. From crowded, stand-up after-work bars in Tokyo to elegant and sedate members-bars in Kyoto, the simple (but exact!) mix of whisky and water has become the national drink of choice. There are a few factors involved with this, but the most important line of reasoning is that whisky is cool, whisky highballs go with food and Japan has a properly mature culture that knows food and drink best enjoyed together.”
